Twilight

Seems just as fashionable to hate it as to love it. Agreed, Twilight hasn't got the greatest writing. It won't become a classic, more of a cult classic. But cult reaction to anything, a book, a film, a TV series, means it must be pushing some big psychological buttons.

I just couldn't figure out why Stephen King was so disparaging, saying "Harry Potter is about doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend." Twilight and Harry Potter are BOTH about doing what is right in the face of adversity, about the hero deciding who they really are and how to achieve their potential, about distinguishing friends who will help you and enemies who will oppose you. BOTH books have mythic qualities, as well as mythical characters, and it's purely a question of whether you'd like your hero's journey packaged as a boy's adventure or a girl's romance.

I'm sure Joseph Campbell would have spotted that right away.
