About the Chinese

Anyone who does read Shen, Book One is going to wonder about the sudden appearance of a people who look and speak Chinese, but don't come from Earth.

Well look, I can't do plot spoilers for Book Two, but I think I should say something about these characters (called the Ha). They come over a little heavy in Book One, and my only fear is that people will accuse me of stereotyping, and having that Western bias against China that is blind to our own military aggression.

Personally, I think the Ha are justified in what they do. They have been fed propaganda by the emperor of Wes, to the effect that the Bormu are dangerous and that something sinister is going on around Usalm. Koda is not doing anything to change their minds. And when you look at what actually happens, it would be enough to make any first time observer think they needed to take swift, firm action.

The Ha will not be perfect, as you'll see in Book Two. But they'll be no more imperfect that any of the other characters in Shen.
