Shen - What's It About?

Awfully enough, it started as a science fiction rip off of Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress".

No, no...not quite true. In 1993, when I wrote the original manuscript, I was a practising Christian. Not a believing one, I later realised, but that's another story. I called the novel 'Pilgrim'. I wanted to turn my own questions and speculations about searching for ultimate truth into a story. It was a story I felt could go on and on, because as far as I was concerned, truth was something you got in fragments, never a whole.

So now, in 2011, being a practising agnostic neo-pagan (thankfully no belief required) I like 'Shen' for the same reasons I liked it when it had a lousy title! The term Shen has its own meaning in Chinese, but in the book I appropriate it into an alien language (Kroxi) where it means a process, a journey or evolution. So whereas in 1993 I might have viewed truth as external, universal fact, I think I'm more inclined to see it as Jungian individuation, the discovery of personal truth.

Planning to publish another sample chapter on the blog, to introduce you to the character who speaks Kroxi. Hoping you'll like her.
