Crowd Fever

London riots just stopped me dead. Didn't want to blog about writing, because it seemed trite.

People are quite plastic in groups. They can be turned this way or that. They don't always know they've caught crowd fever until it all dies down. And maybe some don't think of the madness as a bad thing. Maybe they just see it as another kind of high.

I regularly listen to Dan Carlin's "Common Sense" podcast. Don't always agree with him, but that's half the fun. A few weeks ago he proposed that intoxication should be a human right. It was made in the context of legalising marijuana, so I don't know whether Dan made a list of every means of intoxication, studied it, and decided they were all fine.

But I suspect he didn't. Animals don't seek intoxication like we do, so did we go looking for it in response to our expanding consciousness? Do we do stupid stuff like smash windows and set things on fire because we don't really like being human?
