Sticking Up for The Grind

As much as I moan about it (to myself) I'm glad that I've had to do 'normal' work to support myself.

Reasons:

1. If I'd become a published writer when I was young, I think self-discipline would have been a problem. Work has made me better at routine, and at doing the things I don't like but that need to be done.
2. I'd have taken criticism and bad reviews too seriously. And I'd have been awkward and shy in situations where I had to collaborate or cooperate.
3. I'd have probably got fussy about when and where I wrote. Worse, I think I might have become one of those authors who needs to use a special pen or paper or have a study with south facing windows.
4. I'd have created main characters who are writers. I hate this when it happens in novels I read. It makes the world seem full of writers, when it's mainly full of farmers, shop workers, office nobodies and cleaners.
5. I might not have felt the slightest empathy for farmers, shop workers, office nobodies and cleaners.
