Feeling Fear - WI Presentation

This is how I'll introduce the 'Fast Fiction' section of the talk.

4. Fast Fiction

Now, I know that as soon as I say, 'why don't we try and do some creative writing ', almost everyone in the room will experience fear, mild fear or blind terror. So before we start, and while the feeling is running high in the room, let's talk about the fear. It's a strange fear, isn't it? I mean, it's not as though anyone has run off with our children or burst into this room and threatened us with a gun. We are just a bunch of women sitting with a piece of paper and a pen in front of us, and we're going to spend five minutes (only five minutes) putting some marks on those papers.

But my saying that hasn't made the fear go away, has it? Or has it? No. I'm not sure if anything cures the fear; I've written five novels, thirty-seven short stories, several articles, poems and presentations, and I still feel fear. My theory is that filling a blank page is like dying: you don't know what it's going to be like exactly. And so you'd rather not go there. You'd rather stay the way you are.
