Character

Characters are not loved for what they do, but what they realise. Take James Cain's "The Postman Always Rings Twice". The saddest character is Nick Papadakis, because he doesn't realise who he is, or what's really going on. Sympathy goes to his murderers, but not for their crime. As justice comes forward to demand its due, the culprits look back on their lives and see the granular detail of their choices and consequences. They see themselves as the author sees them -- they realise they are the authors of themselves.
