Setting

And the other thing about James Cain - you were lucky to get so much as a sentence describing the setting. It was mostly 'the lunchroom', 'the kitchen', 'the beach' or 'her room'. All the detail had to be created by the reader.

It works. I have vivid mental images of all these places, as if I'd read paragraphs of text. That's a note to self, that is.
