Oh (heck) Canada

Reading "Annabel" by Kathleen Winter. The author must forgive me if I squirm when yet another set of Canadian rural characters express mystical attachment to their landscape. Being a Canuck, I swear I wasn't related to people like this, or met any in the course of growing up. Or else they were all very, very secretive.

The landscape, for a lot of them, was a source of pain and danger and extra work. The mysticism arrived when people moved into safer, cleaner cities.
