On Kathleen Winter's "Annabel"

A book must be good if 457 pages get read in a week. And yet 'Annabel' has left me cold. The story seems too good, all bad things ironed out in time for the epilogue. Well, with the exception of Wayne/Annabel's mother, whose final state of mind is uncertain. Why is she left out?

Also the writing had the patronising tone of a tale told with moral purpose. Purpose spoken with a soft, lilting voice but nonetheless. Sensible people agree there is still a problem with prejudice against those who don't fit the right wing ideal of sexuality and gender roles. Sensible people don't need Winter to moralise, and insensible people will not read the book, sadly.
