Precocious - Those Doubts

They always come when you reach the middle of whatever you're writing. Last night I had a stab of misgiving, when I thought Precocious didn't have an ending that involved Shasta's mom. Perhaps the feeling is trying to remind me that I haven't decided how attracted Irene is to Nick. Does she understand what Shasta is doing? I don't mean have they discussed it; I don't think that's realistic. But a mother knows her daughter. There must be a point in the narrative when Irene gives some signal, and to Shasta it means, 'I know what you're trying to achieve. I don't feel 100% confident about it, but at the same time I won't try and stop you'.

I suppose then, after Nick molests Shasta, she might wonder whether Irene knew it might happen. This is a twelve year old, so I don't expect flawless analysis of the situation. Will she succumb to childish thinking and blame her mother?
