On the Revision of Dreams

Paula Radcliffe, British marathon runner, has never won an Olympic medal and now, because of injuries, she never will. I feel for her. The cultural imperative to achieve a dream dare not mention failure, lest it jinx the dreamer.

But the majority of us have to revise our dreams, sometimes drastically. This adjustment, if done well, is a great psychological achievement, and should still be rewarded.
