Copycat

Is it me? (Question implies insecurity, or that I so want to be proved wrong.) It is becoming less enjoyable to browse in bookstores, online or otherwise. Copycat versions of sado-masochistic love affairs, copycat versions of vampire romance, copycat versions of 'if you think you were abused as a child, wait til you hear my story'.

And Rachel Joyce is on the Man Booker long list. Eh? "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry" was heartwarming, tidily written, the sort of novel you'd lend to a person who occasionally reads, knowing it wouldn't demand too much. But not Booker material. Are we that short of good choices?

Comments

Totally agree with you on the copycats. It feels quite cynical and disappointing - investing in and appealing to the lowest common denominator again and again.
