The Prison of the Night

Saw Paul Delvaux's painting "L'Appel de la Nuit" http://www.pauldelvaux.com/ and felt a moment of horror. Thought back to so many depictions of witches, their association with moon/night/psychic power/secrecy/magic. These symbols are revered by female pagans (and I count myself one) as empowering. Yet, weren't they most likely attributed to us in paintings and writing by men?

Why can't we be associated with daylight, with the open and the straightforward and the rational? Why was Caroline Criado-Perez abused when she campaigned for the face of Jane Austen on a banknote? Was it because she transgressed the paradigm that women belong in darkness?
